General

Khabarovsk city is the industrial, cultural, administrative and transport center of Khabarovsk Krai. The city was founded just some centuries ago, in 1858 as an outpost to protect the Russian-Chinese border. Khabarovsk City is named after its founder Yerofei Khabarov, the Russian explorer of Siberia and the Far East.

The city stretches along the Amur River, which is the main waterway of the Far East. The city is one big harbor, designed for trade and transport purposes.

The city center stretches itself on three hills and on three main streets – Lenin Street, Marx Street and Serysheva Street. Two broad boulevards — Amurskiy and Ussuri, decorate the city and serve as a resting place for residents of the city. There are also many green parks in the city.

There are a lot of theaters, museums, galleries, the philharmonic and other cultural institutions in Khabarovsk. The most visited museums are regional museums, which expositions are devoted to the history of indigenous peoples and their way of life, art, beliefs, and ideas about the world. Performances and musical comedies are given in puppet theatres and the Theatre for Young People works for children.

The landscape of Khabarovsk Krai is very diverse. Here one can see high cliffs, at the feet of which boulders with traces of fossilized animals are scattered and just with a naked eye in sedimentary rocks the remains of marine life can be seen.
